Shopify vs Shopify Plus: When Should You Actually Upgrade?

"Should we move to Shopify Plus?" comes up almost every time a Shopify store crosses seven figures in revenue. The honest answer is usually "not yet" - Plus solves specific problems, and most of them don't show up until a store hits a particular kind of complexity, not a particular revenue number. Here's what actually changes, what it costs, and how to tell which camp you're in.

What Shopify Plus Actually Gives You

Plus isn't a faster or more "premium" version of the same store. It's a different tier with features that only matter once you need them:

  • Checkout customization. Shopify Scripts and checkout extensibility let you run custom discount logic, shipping rules, and payment conditions that standard Shopify checkout can't do.
  • Native B2B and wholesale. Company accounts, custom price lists, payment terms, and approval workflows, without bolting on a third-party wholesale app.
  • Multi-store management. Several storefronts (different brands, regions, or B2B/B2C splits) run from one Plus organization with shared infrastructure.
  • Flow automation and Launchpad. Built-in workflow automation and scheduled campaign tooling that otherwise means stitching together apps.
  • Higher API limits and dedicated support. Matters once your integrations (ERP, PIM, CRM) are pushing real volume.

What It Costs

Plus platform fees start at roughly $2,000/month (higher with revenue-share pricing on some plans), on top of whatever development work the migration itself requires. That's a real fixed cost, which is exactly why "we're growing" isn't a strong enough reason on its own - the features need to be solving a problem you actually have.

Signals It's Time

  • You're turning down or band-aiding B2B/wholesale orders because standard Shopify has no native way to handle company pricing or approval workflows.
  • You're running (or about to run) more than one storefront off the same catalog and duplicating theme work across them.
  • Checkout needs a business rule - a shipping condition, a payment restriction, a custom discount stack - that no checkout app can cleanly support.
  • Your integrations are hitting standard Shopify's API rate limits during normal operation, not just peak traffic.
  • You need Shopify's own support SLA because an outage at your scale is a revenue event, not an inconvenience.

Signals You Should Stay on Standard Shopify

  • Your current blockers are solvable with apps (subscriptions, bundles, quizzes) rather than checkout-level logic.
  • You run one storefront and have no near-term plan to run a second.
  • B2B is a "maybe someday" idea, not an active sales motion with real orders being turned away today.
  • The $2K+/month fixed cost doesn't yet pencil out against what Plus would actually unblock.

The Middle Ground

A lot of standard Shopify apps now cover a surprising amount of "almost B2B" and "almost multi-store" ground. The right move for many growing brands is to push standard Shopify as far as it reasonably goes, and treat Plus as the next step once a specific, named limitation shows up - not a milestone to hit because competitors mention it.

Making the Call

We build on both tiers and have no incentive to push you toward the more expensive one before you need it.
