Intern — Software Engineer
About the Role
eCommerce is no longer just an online store. It's a multi-channel, API-driven, globally distributed commerce layer powering billions of transactions. At NorthStar, we build and ship the systems behind it — storefronts, integrations, marketplace connectors, and custom platform logic — across BigCommerce, Shopify, Shopify Plus, Odoo, and ERPNext.
As a Software Engineering Intern, you'll step directly into this environment. You'll work on production codebases, alongside engineers who've spent over a decade building eCommerce infrastructure at scale. This isn't about running scripts or writing documentation — it's about shipping real features, solving real problems, and understanding how modern commerce platforms actually work under the hood.
What You'll Do
Six real things you'll be doing from week one.
01
Ship Storefront Features
Build and maintain production features on BigCommerce and Shopify storefronts used by real shoppers every day.
02
Build Backend Systems
Write server-side code in Python or JavaScript to power integrations, automation, and platform-level customizations.
03
Own Your Bugs
Debug, trace, and resolve issues across staging and live environments. You'll learn how production systems actually behave.
04
Join Code Reviews
Review code alongside senior engineers. Read great code, ask hard questions, and sharpen your craft with every PR.
05
Work with Commerce APIs
Go hands-on with BigCommerce and Shopify APIs. Learn how major eCommerce platforms expose their commerce infrastructure.
06
Write Production-Ready Code
Write clean, documented code built to last. Every line you write runs in production and is read by real engineers.
What We're Looking For
You don't need to know everything, but you need to be genuinely curious and driven to build things correctly.
- check_circleStudying or recently completed a degree in CS, Software Engineering, or a related field
- check_circleSolid understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and how they work in the browser
- check_circleFamiliarity with at least one backend language such as Python, Node.js, or similar
- check_circleComfortable with Git and GitHub for version control and collaborative code workflows
- check_circleStrong written communication skills for working effectively in a fully remote team
- check_circleSelf-motivated and reliable, able to manage your own time and deliver independently
Nice to Have
Bonus points, but none of these are blockers if you don't have them yet.
- check_circleHands-on experience with BigCommerce, Shopify, Magento, or WooCommerce
- check_circleBasic understanding of REST APIs: making requests, reading responses, and working with JSON
- check_circleExperience with React, Vue.js, or any modern JavaScript frontend framework
- check_circleFamiliarity with MySQL or PostgreSQL and writing basic queries
What We Offer
Everything you need to do your best work and grow fast.
- check_circleFully remote role with flexible hours, work from anywhere in the world
- check_circleReal production exposure from week one, not sandboxed projects or dummy tasks
- check_circleDirect mentorship from senior developers with 15+ years of eCommerce experience
- check_circleStrong performers are considered for full-time roles at the end of the internship
- check_circleStructured milestones and clear goals so you always know what you're working toward
- check_circleAsync-friendly culture, work when you're most focused and at your best
