Intern — Data Analyst
About the Role
eCommerce generates enormous volumes of data — orders, sessions, customer journeys, product performance, marketplace feeds, and platform events — flowing across BigCommerce, Shopify, Odoo, and ERPNext every single day. At NorthStar, we use that data to make better decisions, surface real insights for clients, and continuously improve the systems we build.
As a Data Analyst Intern, you'll work directly with that data. You'll write queries against real production datasets, build dashboards that people actually use, and help translate raw numbers into clear, actionable insights. This isn't about running sample notebooks in isolation — it's about working on live data, understanding how commerce platforms generate it, and communicating what it means to engineers and stakeholders alike.
What You'll Do
Six real things you'll be doing from week one.
01
Query Real eCommerce Data
Write SQL queries against live datasets spanning orders, products, sessions, and platform events across BigCommerce and Shopify stores.
02
Build Dashboards & Reports
Create and maintain dashboards that surface key metrics to clients and internal teams, turning raw data into clear, readable views.
03
Clean & Transform Datasets
Prepare, validate, and transform messy real-world data using Python or SQL. You'll learn how data quality directly impacts business decisions.
04
Surface Actionable Insights
Dig into sales trends, conversion funnels, and platform performance. Identify patterns and communicate findings to engineers and clients clearly.
05
Support Data-Driven Decisions
Work alongside engineers and project leads to answer data questions that directly shape product and platform decisions for real clients.
06
Document Your Analysis
Write clear documentation for your queries, methods, and findings. Good analysis only has impact when others can understand and build on it.
What We're Looking For
You don't need to know everything, but you need to be genuinely curious and driven to find answers in data.
- check_circle Studying or recently completed a degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field
- check_circle Working knowledge of SQL — comfortable writing queries, joins, aggregations, and basic transformations
- check_circle Familiarity with Python for data manipulation, using libraries such as pandas or similar
- check_circle Comfortable working with spreadsheets — Excel or Google Sheets — for analysis and reporting
- check_circle Strong written communication skills for documenting analysis and sharing findings clearly in a remote team
- check_circle Self-motivated and reliable, able to manage your own time and deliver independently without close supervision
Nice to Have
Bonus points, but none of these are blockers if you don't have them yet.
- check_circle Experience with a BI or visualization tool such as Looker, Metabase, Tableau, or Google Data Studio
- check_circle Exposure to eCommerce platforms such as Shopify, BigCommerce, or similar and their data models
- check_circle Basic understanding of REST APIs and how to pull data from third-party platform endpoints
- check_circle Familiarity with version control using Git for managing analysis notebooks or scripts
What We Offer
Everything you need to do your best work and grow fast.
- check_circle Fully remote role with flexible hours, work from anywhere in the world
- check_circle Real production data exposure from week one, not toy datasets or sandboxed exercises
- check_circle Direct mentorship from senior engineers with 15+ years of eCommerce and data experience
- check_circle Strong performers are considered for full-time roles at the end of the internship
- check_circle Structured milestones and clear goals so you always know what you're working toward
- check_circle Async-friendly culture, work when you're most focused and at your best
